Corey Seager (29, Texas Rangers) is swinging at bats. He just missed a cycling hit.
Seager went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, one RBI and two runs scored while starting at second base against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Thursday at Globe Field in Arlington, Texas.
He got on base in his first at-bat of the day. In the bottom of the first inning, Seager took a three-pitch fastball from Angels starter Jamie Varia and lined it to left field. A walk and a hit-by-pitch advanced Seager to third, but he was stranded at the plate.
In his second at-bat, he hit a long ball. In the bottom of the third, with his team trailing 1-0, he led off with a double to center field on a changeup from Barria. He then scored on Nate Lowe’s two-run single.
It was his second hit in as many at-bats. In the bottom of the fifth inning, with his team up 2-1, Seager hit a fastball from Varia over the center field fence. The eighth of the season.
Now he’s just a triple away from a cycling hit. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning and his team down 3-4, Seager swung at a two-seam sinker from reliever Aaron Loop. It sailed high and into the center-field foul pole.
Seeger stepped to the plate for the final time. He faced Jacob Webb in the bottom of the ninth with the score 3-7. After picking off two pitches, he hit a third fastball, but this time it was a fly ball to left field.
He was unable to get a cycling hit and had to settle for a three-hit game.
It was a better performance than his opposite number on the day, Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani went 2-for-3 with a walk and five strikeouts.

However, his first year results were dismal compared to the hefty price tag. Despite hitting 33 home runs, Seager batted just .245 with a .317 on-base percentage and .455 slugging percentage. Compared to his .306 batting average, .394 on-base percentage, and .521 slugging percentage in 2021 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, it wasn’t worth the money.
Fortunately, this year was different. After a brief setback with a hamstring injury, he exploded in June. In 11 games in June, he’s batting .435 with a .490 on-base percentage and .761 slugging percentage.
